Learn How to Make Tie Fleece Baby Blankets

Handmade baby blankets are an excellent gift for baby showers or other occasions, but they can also save you a lot of money if you it’s destined for your own child, especially in the current economical climate, when the luxury of buying a lot of things is not an affordable to many of us. I will teach you a cheap and easy way to make yourself a fleece baby blanket, and here comes the good part for many young mommies out there, without having to master the art of sewing.
These are the materials that I used for my first experiment that was a success:
* Two pieces of fleece fabric – I chose different color for each piece because I want it to be a two-sides blanket. The colors are entirely your choice. But I can give you one useful advice: don’t buy thick fleece, because the cutting process will take forever and can be a very difficult task.
* Very sharp scissors that you won’t need after anymore – fleece is a very tough fabric and it will blunt the scissors.
* Tape
* Paper clips
Now that you’ve got everything in hand, it’s time to start. First of all, make sure that the two pieces of fleece have the exact same size. Then you have to put them one on top of each other and use the paper clips to hold them together.
The next step is cutting the fringes of the blanket. I used to cut them in 4 inch length and 1 inch wide and I think that is a pretty good size. If you are having trouble approximating these figures, you can always use a ruler to measure the length and wide. And also, try to cut the fringes as straight as possible, but that is not always a must.
After all four sides of the blanket have fringes, you can start to tie them together (one fringe from each piece of fabric). You will have to be very careful with this step, because it can be pretty difficult to untie two fringes that were tied in a wrong way. Another tip: I used only one knot, but if you don’t want the fringes to untie when you wash the blanket, make a double knot.
Repeat this process for the remaining three sides of the blanket.
The Hidden Dangers of Electric Blankets

When you think of a blanket, you hardly think Danger! But those cozy electric blankets that keep you warm during the winter months account for thousands of household fires every year! Here are some electric blanket safety tips to keep you from adding to those frightening statistics.
There are some signs of danger that should stop you from even plugging in your electric blanket in the first place. Frayed fabric, creases, dampness, loose connections, or exposed wires, mean it’s time to throw your electric blanket away. You’ll want to keep a special eye on the cord, as any wear and tear on it is particularly dangerous.
As well, any electric blanket that has been around for more than 10 years is a serious hazard. This is why you should never buy a used electric blanket.
The rule of thumb is: when in doubt, throw it out! An electric blanket is easy to replace.
When storing your blanket, roll it up (or keep it flat), instead of folding it. Why? Folding your electric blanket can damage the wires, even if you’re folding it over your lap! Other tips: don’t keep your electric blanket on all night and never get it wet (not even to wash it). If your electric blanket does get wet, do not use it or turn it on.
It’s best to get your electric blanket tested regularly (every three years is ideal), to make sure it is good shape and doesn’t pose a threat to you and your loved ones.
Lastly, always follow directions. The manufacturer’s instructions must be taken seriously!

Blanket Basics

Blankets and throws are used to provide warmth, and in the case of a throw, provide the bed with a decorative touch. Blankets are designed to fit the bed and are available in regular bed sizes and mattress sizes. Throws tend to be smaller as they are meant for individual use (as opposed to couples). Throws are great for adding extra layers to a bed or for cuddling up on the couch.
Blankets and throws are available in a wide array of materials, colors and styles. More common materials include cotton, polyester, wool, cashmere, acrylic and nylon, finished in fleece, chenille and velour, which impart a soft, cozy feel. Given their decorative nature, throws are more often found in cashmere, chenille, velour and other luxurious materials. Some people enjoy showing off their talent and choose to knit blankets and throws and give them away either as gifts or as a simple gesture of sincerity.
Many individuals choose to match their blankets to their bedding and/or the décor of their room. Blankets and throws are not only used in bedrooms, but also in living rooms, recreational rooms and dens in order to relax and warm up.
Electric, thermal, or warming blankets are also available. Although there are several names for this type of blanket, the concept is the same; a network of fine wires provides electricity to heat the blanket. Many electric blankets feature remote controls, multiple heat settings, automatic on/off settings and “temperature smart” technology. A temperature smart blanket monitors room and body temperature and adjusts the heat accordingly. While modern electric blankets are considered much safer than their predecessors are, it is still advisable to follow the blanket’s safety instructions carefully. Electric, thermal and warming blankets are great for camping trips and other outdoor events, which may require a little extra warmth.
Blankets can become very sentimental to individuals and provide a level of comfort beyond just the way they feel. Many individuals become very attached to a certain blanket, especially ones from their childhood. Blankets are a great way to cozy up on the couch and relax in a comfortable atmosphere.
Swan’s Island Winter Blankets

Established in 1990 by John and Carolyn Grace, two attorneys who left their jobs to live closer to the land, Swans Island began as a small wool spinning operation off the coast of Maine, a place long-known for its sheep herding industry. The couple started creating hand-woven blankets from specialty wools using natural dying and artisan weaving techniques, and in 1996, their dedication to this traditional blanket craft was honored with a Blue Ribbon from the Smithsonian. Since then, Swans Island has enlarged its business to include clothing and other wool products for home and for baby. But the original intent – creating authentically-made blankets from local resources – has remained. The Winter Blankets from Swans Island are not just a way to keep warm – they are truly functional works of art. Woven from wool from flocks of untended sheep that live just east of Penobscot Bay in Maine on Nash Island, the Winter Blanket features two layers of hand-spun wool, all dyed by hand using natural materials. Available in twin, double or king sizes, when you cuddle up with this “Best Of” blanket, you’re wrapping yourself in a true American classic.
