The Power of Posture – Travel Pillows Not Created Equal
May 1, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
While traveling cross-country a few times last year, I experienced something I suspect that a lot of travelers out there can relate to. All of the travel pillows I tried were more uncomfortable than not wearing one at all.
I tried numerous travel pillows, and more often than not, I would arrive tired and with a sore neck that would last for hours or even days. My head and neck just were not being supported properly.
A little research helped me identify the problem.
All day long, your postural muscles in your neck are in contraction, to support your head. When you try to relax, your postural muscles want to relax with you. This is fine when you are lying down, because your bed supports you. However, when you are sitting up, like in an airline chair, your head is left unsupported.
The travel pillows that I tried were poorly designed for this purpose. There was no support under my chin. To make matters worse, the excess padding in the back, pushed my head forward even further.
Remember this equation:
Posture = Comfort.
When you are lying in bed, gravity helps keep your body in alignment. The trick is to keep that same posture sitting up as you have when you are lying down.
When you are sitting up and trying to relax, gravity is the enemy. Without full support gravity will take over and as your neck muscles try to relax, your head will drop forward or you will cock it to one side. You have lost your posture.
Now you are out of alignment and the weight of your head is placing stress on your neck. In addition to being uncomfortable and unable to relax, you will likely be sore and get very little rest. Remember, the average adult human head weighs 15-20 pounds. Pick up a 20 pound weight the next time you’re in a gym and think about that tugging on your spine as the plane bumps and jars.
The best travel pillow is one that is comfortable, lightweight, and gives you full support, including under the chin.
Recently, several major airlines announced they will no longer provide pillows on their flights. Good riddance. In addition to the question about sanitation and hygiene, those little white pillows were basically worthless.
Use this opportunity to get yourself a top quality memory foam travel pillow with full support. You will arrive healthier and happier. Isn’t that what travel and life are all about?

How to Find a Bedding Sale

Down bedding is considered the platinum standard for bedding. Its cloud like look and comforting warmth can help transcend a cold, dreary day. Down bedding is a seasonal product that has price variations from a material stand point through the year. Most department stores have ‘winter’ bedding programs that go up in October and then sell discount down starting in January. Most consumers use down bedding October through March – so for the patient shopper down deals can be had.
Where And How Down Bedding Comes From?
Down bedding usually consists of a down filling being inserted into pillows, comforters, blankets and throws. Down as a material is dramatically different then feathers – where down is soft and provides warmth, feathers are firm and provide support. Typically, the price for down filling is roughly 12 times the cost of feathers – so as a filling material down is much more expensive. Down is collected from Europe and China where consumers in those regions enjoy Duck and Goose on special occasions much like Americans prefer Turkey at Thanksgiving.
Down is nature’s best insulator and helps to keep the birds warm even in frigid waters. Hence the use of down as a filling material is preferred for comforters, blankets and throws to provide amazing warmth without weight. Feathers on the other hand are used for support as the hypoallergenic standard.
Down and feathers are a commodity item that are bought, sold and traded around the globe. Weather patterns can affect the prices of down filling because if it is cold in China and enough Chinese consumers need to buy warm down jackets – the filling material will experience a price spike. These price spikes will be reflected in the prices of down bedding at department stores. Usually the best time to buy down bedding is after the winter season as stores try to move old the remnant merchandise and bring in the new spring collections.
One area of opportunity is to buy down bedding online and even better still direct from the manufacturer. Buying through the down manufacturer is a nice way to avoid the department store mark up for their merchandise. Typically buying down bedding online can save 30-40% off typical retail prices. In addition to manufacturers there are a number of overstock and liquidation type websites where smart consumers can find bargains. The only downside to buying discount down bedding from those overstock type sources is that you are not sure who originally manufactured the item and what quality standards they use to make sure the items adhere to both federal and industry quality standards.
Shopping For Quality Bed Linens

Getting the right bed linens is important for many reasons, but most of all because this decision will mean being comfortable while you are going to sleep or tossing and turning all night. There are a wide variety of bed linens to choose from in many different fabrics, so you should consider all of your options very carefully. It is important not just to get linens that you are comfortable with physically, but also in terms of style and color. When you are picking out sheets for your bed for example, you should make sure that their color and overall design matches the comforter and rest of the linens on your bed. This will make for a more stylish and elegant look, so you can rest every night knowing that your bedroom looks great.
Shopping for bed linens means more than just sheets though. You have a whole variety of different pieces to choose from, including pillow covers. Obviously you will want the covers you get for your pillows to match those of the sheets regarding color and fabric. If they are getting a little worn out and need replacing, then it is recommended that when looking either online or in the store, you find ones that match the sheets and other bedding as much as possible. If you have developed a color scheme for your bed linens that is mostly red, then you will want to stick with varying shades of red. This doesn’t mean that they all have to be the same exact color, just similar in shade and tone.
More and more people are starting to buy fitted sheets for their beds, because they go on so easily and feel great against the skin, especially when you choose the right fabric. Silk for example, is one of the most commonly chosen fabrics for bed sheets. It won’t stick to your skin in the middle of the night or irritate you in any way. It’s completely soft and will help you to get to sleep a lot faster than cotton or other fabrics used in making bed sheets. Although you may have to pay a little bit more for sheets that are made out of silk, in the end it will be well worth it.
A reversible bed cover is another great bed linen item to pick up, simply because you can flip it right over and have it look exactly the same. It means less fuss when you are organizing and changing up the linens on your bed. Make sure that when you are getting a comforter or bed cover, you choose one that is soft, gentle, yet thick enough to keep you warm at night and comfortable while lying in bed.

It is hard to find a place that sells bedding for toddlers and when you are able to find one you have to see if it is right for your kids. But, we as parents can not be swayed by these sudden fads that our children go through especially when it pertains to their bedding. What Are Duvet Covers and Why You Should Get One
May 1, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
When it comes to bedding and everything that goes on your bed, it’s really quite amazing. There are endless options for sheets, pillows, comforters, duvets, and all sorts of things. Speaking of duvet covers, should you really even worry about getting one?
I think you should. A duvet cover is a special cover that goes over your comforter. Think of it almost like a slip cover. It not only protects your comforter, but it also allows you to instantly change the fashion of your bed. The best duvets in my opinion are silk duvets where the covering is actually made of silk. Hard to find but amazing.
Duvets are great to use because the fact you can change the color, the fabric, and the color whenever you want. So depending on the season, you can have the color that works for you. Not to mention, it also works if you change the look of your decorative pillows or even your whole room.
Duvets also protect your comforter because many people have great comforters, but they are usually white. And since comforters are pretty expensive, they are something that you want to protect.
Duvets covers are actually a little more expensive than you would typically think. But like all things in the bedding world, it is worth it to spend a little more because you really do get what you pay for. If you want to move into luxury duvet covers, then I really recommend silk duvets.
Silk duvets come in two kinds. The first is a duvet that has silk fibers on the inside, but it’s really covered by cotton. These are soft and all, but not really as good as silk duvets with silk coverings. These types of duvets work really well because you get all the benefits of silk. They are hypoallergenic, they regulate your temperature really well, and they don’t aggravate allergies or asthma.
If you have a good bed and a great bedroom then you need a great duvet cover. Not to mention you will probably have around three that you can change throughout the year. I hope that you learned some good info on duvets, especially silk ones.

One of the most ideal gifts for an expectant couple is a baby crib bedding. Buying a baby bedding set for a newborn may seem overwhelming for first time parents, thus it would really make a great sense to buy them such wonderful gift to be presented at the baby shower. The good news is, there are lots of baby beddings available in the market that are not just useful and cute, but meaningful as well. With these great choices, you will surely enjoy the shopping and will surely have a fun time while doing it.
However, before you shop for a baby bedding or bedding accessories, there are some factors that you need to consider. You have to know and understand the ins and outs when it comes to crib beddings and bedding accessories. So, let’s find out what they are…
The first thing to think of before buying a baby bedding are of course the most basic ones. Like, you need to think of the things that will complete the baby’s nursery. Chances are, people will likely to remember the theme of the nursery after they’ve already bought an item that doesn’t fit to the room. In this case, you should think of the nursery room beforehand and make a list of baby bedding supplies that are not yet bought by the parents, as you don’t want your present to be a duplicate one as well. There are several necessary items that usually included in a bedding set, these include crib sheets, blankets, baby bumpers, and pillows. You don’t want to miss any of those necessary items if you really want to give a complete set of baby bedding shower gift. After which, you may then start to think of the accessories you may want to incorporate to the set.
Among the accessories you may want to include in the set are musical mobiles, duvets and pillows, diaper stacker, toy bags, wall hangings, window valance, moses bed or bassinet, throw rug, and wall border. These items will complete the baby’s nursery and actually are the things that the new parents would really look forward in a luxurious gift.
Your choice of crib bedding set must depend on the design of the child’s room. Remember that as the child grows older, he/she will have more interest about exploring the surroundings. That’s why baby mobiles and wall hangings are ideal because toddlers will eagerly watch these things. Well-designed wall hangings can easily grow with the baby, turning a nursery room into a toddler room.
Baby crib bedding sets are both available in local and online stores. If you don’t have time to shop around at a mall, just simply browse online and check out websites that offer a wide variety of baby items and baby shower gifts. These online stores would be glad to offer you bedding sets and bedding accessories for an infant’s room. Some of the choices can be personalized, like pillow cases, blankets, crib sheets, baby mobiles and the like.
Are Expensive Down Comforters Really Worth It?
May 1, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Consider the Canadian Goose. How in the world do these fairly compact animals get enough insulation on their frames to avoid freezing, yet remain unencumbered enough to become airborne? The secret is goose down; fine fibers underneath their coarse outer feathers which capture layers of air and comprise nature’s perfect insulation.
Even with thousands of years spent fiddling with materials from animal hides to wadded newspaper, we haven’t yet formulate a product that combines lightweight comfort and world-class insulation the way in which goose down can.
Goose down comforters tend to be incredibly effective at keeping people warm and cozy during the night. As can be anticipated, a few comforters will be better made than others, and many comforters are merely intended for distinctive purposes. We have reviewed three pretty good, hypoallergenic comforters for the purpose of this article.
Pearl Crescent Down comforters are filled with 80% goose down and wrapped with remarkably silky 330 thread count cotton sateen material. These plush down comforters are accompanied by a 75 year limited warranty, which may likely be the most generous available. Because they start at $450, Pearl Crescent’s products are not bargain priced comforters by any measure, although they are value priced, signifying that the consumer will get a very good product for your money. Also, be sure not to miss the Full Bedskirt.
Willoughby advertizes goose down comforters constructed with Siberian White Goose down, yet they fail to explain why that certain kind of goose should produce better down than North American game birds. The baffle box stitching upon their comforters does a better job of retaining the filling in place than several other design variations, and their microfiber casing offers velveteen softness on top of the cushiony goose down core. These comforters include synthetic fibers, as a result if you have a problem with that, you could want to continue hunting. Willoughby’s comforters start at $375, however, so if you don’t really mind a little synthetic, maybe these can be a comfortable decision. Another good model is the King Bed skirt.
For customers who wish to gild lilies at every opportunity, there is such thing as a luxury down comforter which, you should understand, is luxury priced also. An Empress Hypodown Comforter is brimming with a very nearly perfect 95% down filling and wrapped in an equally extraordinary 350 count cotton shell.
An Empress Hypodown comforter is stitched with a very appealing baffle box cloud pattern which is moreover extremely effective at preserving the filling in place while making lots of those insulating air pockets. This stunning piece of comfort features a beginning purchase price of $1028.
Learn How to Make Tie Fleece Baby Blankets
May 1, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Handmade baby blankets are an excellent gift for baby showers or other occasions, but they can also save you a lot of money if you it’s destined for your own child, especially in the current economical climate, when the luxury of buying a lot of things is not an affordable to many of us. I will teach you a cheap and easy way to make yourself a fleece baby blanket, and here comes the good part for many young mommies out there, without having to master the art of sewing.
These are the materials that I used for my first experiment that was a success:
* Two pieces of fleece fabric – I chose different color for each piece because I want it to be a two-sides blanket. The colors are entirely your choice. But I can give you one useful advice: don’t buy thick fleece, because the cutting process will take forever and can be a very difficult task.
* Very sharp scissors that you won’t need after anymore – fleece is a very tough fabric and it will blunt the scissors.
* Tape
* Paper clips
Now that you’ve got everything in hand, it’s time to start. First of all, make sure that the two pieces of fleece have the exact same size. Then you have to put them one on top of each other and use the paper clips to hold them together.
The next step is cutting the fringes of the blanket. I used to cut them in 4 inch length and 1 inch wide and I think that is a pretty good size. If you are having trouble approximating these figures, you can always use a ruler to measure the length and wide. And also, try to cut the fringes as straight as possible, but that is not always a must.
After all four sides of the blanket have fringes, you can start to tie them together (one fringe from each piece of fabric). You will have to be very careful with this step, because it can be pretty difficult to untie two fringes that were tied in a wrong way. Another tip: I used only one knot, but if you don’t want the fringes to untie when you wash the blanket, make a double knot.
Repeat this process for the remaining three sides of the blanket.
